FPC Old Growth Hike : The Forest Park Conservancy is a non-profit group that coordinates its efforts with Portland Parks & Recreation's City Nature Division to protect and improve Forest Park. As a thank you to some of its regular volunteers it recently led a group of them on a hike through old-growth acreage it owns. The site is located near the north end of the park. Matt Wagoner, Trails & Restoration Manager, led the hikers and provided commentary on what they were seeing. Mikala Soroka, Volunteer Coordinator, and Lucy Cohen and Graham Klag, both Trails & Restoration Coordinators, assisted with the hike.

Beaverton: A Multiculteral City : These images are from a project for the U.S. State Department, which was working on an online article about immigrants in Beaverton, Oregon, and the immigrant experience in America. These photos cover an open house at Bilal Mosque, school translators discussing their work, children attending a Korean school, a pastor and some of his parishioners in a Bible study class within a Latino congregation, Indian classical dance instruction, shoppers at ethnic grocery stores and more.

South Park Blocks : Walking through the Portland South Park Blocks near PSU is always a pleasure. The Pacific Northwest winter usually offers up rain and grey skies, flattening the light. Winter recedes and a brighter light arrives with spring and stays on throughout the summer, slanting shadows across light-struck patches in the park.

Up Close : The overcast sky provided excellent testing conditions for my new Nikon D700, a great piece of equipment for close-up photos. For this test, I just wanted to use the light that was there and a tripod for most images. All these photos were made around our Portland home.

Green Drinks at Migration Brewing : One of Green Drinks' past meetings was held at Migration Brewing on the east side of the Willamette River. Proceeds from the evening went to SCRAP(scrapaction.org), a local nonprofit that strives to inspire creative reuse of materials it collects. It was perfect weather for an outdoor gathering, drinks and conversations among people interested in the environment, networking and a good time.
